A die cap forms when a struck coin fails to eject from the press and sticks to the upper die, then repeatedly strikes the next several planchets fed into the press, gradually wrapping itself around the die shaft into a bowl-like shape; this 1974-D Lincoln cent shows exactly that kind of dramatic, distorted strike.
