By 1964, the country was being remade at home and abroad -- the civil rights and voting rights acts of 1964-65 dismantled legal segregation, the Vietnam War escalated sharply, and the Coinage Act of 1965 stripped silver from circulating dimes and quarters as the decade's turbulence reached even the nation's pocket change. This 90%-silver Washington quarter, first struck to mark George Washington's 200th birthday, was in circulation during exactly this period. This one came from the Denver Mint, which opened in 1906 to strike coin from Rocky Mountain gold and silver.
