By 1955, Eisenhower-era America combined suburban prosperity with Cold War anxiety -- the 1957 launch of Sputnik triggered the Space Race, and the civil rights movement was gathering force through the decade, from the 1954 Brown v. Board decision to the Montgomery bus boycott. This 90%-silver Roosevelt dime, rushed into production within weeks of FDR's 1945 death, was struck squarely within this period. This one came from the San Francisco Mint, opened in 1854 to coin the flood of West Coast bullion.
