In 1950, postwar America was booming: the GI Bill sent veterans to college and into new suburbs, the Cold War with the Soviet Union began in earnest, and the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950 reminded the country that the peace remained an uneasy one. This 90%-silver Washington quarter, first struck to mark George Washington's 200th birthday, was in circulation during exactly this period. This one came from the San Francisco Mint, opened in 1854 to coin the flood of West Coast bullion.
