Denver's 1927 double eagle mintage was tiny, and because most double eagles from that era were later melted down under the 1933 gold recall rather than saved by collectors, the 1927-D has become one of the rarest and most valuable coins in the entire Saint-Gaudens double eagle series, with only a small handful of genuine examples known today.
