Intriguing History

San Francisco struck only 24 dimes in 1894, reportedly at the request of a local bank official, and their origin story has become the stuff of numismatic legend: one tale holds that a young girl spent one on ice cream rather than saving it, and decades later a specimen believed to be that very coin sold at auction for over $1 million. With so few struck and fewer still surviving, the 1894-S ranks among the most famous rarities in all of American coinage.
