This 1876 Seated Liberty dime was struck as the nation prepared to celebrate its Centennial at Philadelphia's massive World's Fair that summer. 1876 was also a year when silver coinage quietly did outsized work in everyday commerce: silver dollars remained absent from circulation after the Crime of '73 ended their free coinage, and greenbacks were not yet fully redeemable for coin, so small silver like this dime carried much of the era's day-to-day monetary weight.
