Authorized in 1873 specifically to compete with Mexican and other trade coins circulating across Asia, the Trade Dollar carried slightly more silver than a standard dollar to appeal to merchants in China, and San Francisco's proximity to Pacific shipping routes made it the workhorse mint for the new export coin from its very first year.
