Intriguing History
This doubled-die variety comes from the New Orleans Mint's 1841 Seated Liberty quarter production, just three years after that branch mint opened to help process the flood of gold and silver moving through Southern trade routes. The country was still reeling from the Panic of 1837, and 1841 itself brought political chaos: William Henry Harrison died only a month into his presidency, thrusting John Tyler into a White House whose legitimacy his own cabinet openly disputed. Coinage from this cash-strapped, turbulent period survives in modest numbers today.
