1822 Capped Bust Dime (1809-1837)
Intriguing History
By 1822, James Monroe was well into his second term, presiding over the so-called Era of Good Feelings, a period of relative political calm following the War of 1812 and the near-collapse of the young nation's finances during the Panic of 1819. Silver dimes like this one were struck in modest numbers and hand-fed one planchet at a time into screw presses. Surviving examples carry the honest wear of decades spent circulating through the frontier economy that Monroe's America was still building.
